CBI warns of jobs threat to chemicals industry

More
than 25,000 jobs in the chemical industry are under threat from European Union
plans to tighten environmental regulations, according to the Confederation of
British Industry (CBI).

Under
the plans all chemicals must be safety tested and information on any risks
passed on to the European Commission.

The
CBI says this means 30,000 chemicals will have to be tested.

CBI
deputy director general John Cridland said the regulations would lead to
large-scale job losses because chemical production would be moved to the Far
East, where the stringent regulations do not exist.
