The
Ministry of Defence paid out a record £100m in compensation to servicemen and
women injured as a result of negligence last year.
The
figures released by the National Audit Office showed that the largest single
payout was £4m and went to a naval cadet who was injured after being ordered to
jump into a canoe.
Ten
years ago, the total bill for claims reached £25m.
The
audit office warned of even bigger claims in the future relating to Gulf War
veterans’ illnesses and post-traumatic stress disorder.

These
future claims could run into hundreds of millions of pounds, it said.
