Advising employers on dealing with domestic violence

An
employers’ guide to dealing with staff suffering from domestic violence has
been launched.

Opportunity
Now and Women’s Aid have developed The Good Practice Guide for Employers on
Domestic Violence and the Workplace.

It
provides advice and recommendations on how to respond to victims of domestic
violence, including how employers should react, legal responsibilities and good
practice.

According
to Barbara Roche, minister for social exclusion and equality, employers have a
responsibility to help the one in four women who suffer domestic violence.

“The
workplace is key to raising awareness on domestic violence,” she said. “We know
for many women, work is a place of safety where they may confide in others
about their experiences and where they can access help.”

Now said domestic violence impacts heavily on the sufferer’s ability to
function properly at work, resulting in increased stress levels and absence and
lower productivity.
