North
East trade union leader Kevin Curran has been confirmed as the new general
secretary of the GMB union.
Curran,
who was North East general secretary for six years, secured about two-thirds of
the vote in a ballot of the union’s 700,000 members.
He
succeeds John Edmonds, who has served as general secretary for five years.
He
has promised to make the union more transparent and open and to widen the
debate beyond London and into the regions.
