BAE workers pay for cost overrun of Nimrod project

More
than 1,000 workers at BAE Systems are to lose their jobs, largely as a result
of the huge cost overrun on the Nimrod attack aircraft project.

The
firm said two-thirds of the job losses can be blamed on the £750m extra costs
it agreed to shoulder in a deal with the Ministry of Defence last month. The
rest of the layoffs are due to the general downturn in the civil aviation
market.

Almost
500 workers will be cut from BAE’s plant at Woodford in Cheshire; there will be
195 layoffs at Prestwick, in Ayrshire; 164 at Warton, Lancashire; and 154 at
Chadderton, near Manchester.
