Agco
has announced the final closure of its Massey Ferguson tractor factory in
Coventry.
The
company said the plant will close on 30 June, despite the Transport and General
Workers’ Union (T&G) efforts to retain production.
Peter
Booth, T&G national organiser for manufacturing said: "It is deeply
disappointing that Agco have now announced the shutdown of all production at
Massey Ferguson. The union believes this goes against the company’s objectives
set in September, to retain some sustainable manufacturing at the site, and
effectively means it has not fulfilled the terms of the agreed settlement.
"We
questioned the company in September to establish the sustainability and
feasibility of continuing production, and it said it was confident of its
position.
"It
is fair to say there is a strong feeling of resentment and disappointment among
the workforce, who understandably feel they have been strung along. It is not
the first time they have been let down by this company.
