More
than 500 striking London firefighters are working part-time as taxi drivers,
the London Evening Standard claims.
The
Standard claims thousands of firefighters are earning enough in their second
jobs to hold out for a pay increase.
Union
leaders said around 20 per cent of London’s 5,800 firefighters have a second
job, but local authority employers refute this – claiming the figure is closer
to 80 per cent.
The
Standard quotes a ‘highly-placed’ source in the taxi industry who said:
"It is well-known among cabbies that out of 24,000 qualified drivers,
between 500 and 600 are firefighters."
It
is claimed that firefighters working as cabbies at least two days per week
could earn £300 on top of the £21,500 they earn from the fire brigade.

more work as minicab drivers and tradesmen, the paper said.
