Plans
to cut 850 jobs at Vauxhall’s Ellesmere Port plant could threaten its future,
according to the T&G union.
The
union is concerned that the proposed job cuts will make the plant’s plans to
produce the Astra and the Vectra on a three-shift operation unworkable.
Despite
the projected cuts, Vauxhall said it expects to build 185,000 cars at Ellesmere
Port this year.
A
spokesman for the company said no final decision had been taken on the planned
job losses.
The
company is hoping to achieve any job reductions through voluntary redundancy
and early retirement.
