Senior
civil servants will be able to earn up to £180,000 a year as part of a new
performance-based pay system announced yesterday to attract and retain top
talent in the service.
Pay
awards under the system will be based on an individual’s contribution to their
department’s success, relative to that of their peers.
Poor
performers will receive little or no pay increase.

aim of the new four-tier pay scale is to help the service compete with the
private sector for senior talent as well as motivating and retaining current
staff.
