Teaching profession under threat from retention problem

The failure
to retain teachers has led to the worst shortages in schools for 36 years,
Ofsted chief Mike Tomlinson has claimed.

Four in ten
teachers now leave the profession before they have completed three years in the
job, he said.

Tomlinson
believes one of the reasons for the retention problem is because low salaries for
newly qualified teachers mean they have little hope of getting on the property
ladder.

The Government
though claims that there are more teachers now than at any time over the past
17 years.

“As well as
introducing a range of measures to recruit new teachers into the profession we
are given heads the power and money to put in place their own strategies to
recruit and retain high quality teaching staff,” said a DfE spokesperson.
