Management consultancies and
banking are the industries that students most want to pursue a career in,
according to a report by recruitment agency Fresh Minds.
Twenty-nine per cent of the
1,100 students questioned hope to work in a management consultancy, while over
50 per cent thought that banking would be the least intellectually challenging
City job.
Commenting on the report, Lisa
New, head of graduate recruitment at Merrill Lynch Investment Mangers, said,
"Consultants and banks market themselves very well in universities. They
will present on campus and bring in ex-students to talk to them about the
benefits of the industries.
"Money is the main
attraction to graduates. The average wage for starting post-graduates in
banking is £35,000."
The report also claims that
students are ill-informed about job opportunities because of poor university
career services, and often apply to over-subscribed to sectors.
