A teacher has this week received an out-of-court stress settlement of more than £250,000. The payment, a record for a female teacher, is one of the highest awards for a victim of stress.
Janice Howell, a teacher at Maindee Junior School in Newport, claimed that between September 1994 and February 1996 she received little support in dealing with her special needs class. She suffered two breakdowns.

This latest award has been topped only by the £300,000 payment to a teacher in Shropshire, who claimed that the pupils at his school were out of control after a new head teacher ignored staff views.
