IT salaries rise by up to 16.7 per cent

IT professionals saw pay rises in line with the industry average of 4.2 per cent last year, according to a survey published by William M Mercer this week.

Mercer’s 2000 Information Technology Compensation Survey includes pay data from 935 large organisations in the US and the rest of the world, representing more than 185,000 IT workers in 214 jobs.

Employees in 10 of the most highly populated jobs in the survey saw median rises in base pay ranging from 2.3 per cent to 7.4 per cent.

Other IT employees fared better with increases of basic pay of up to 16.7 per cent.

David Van De Voort, leader of Mercer’s Global IT Workforce Effectiveness consulting group said, “Rapid promotions are common in the IT world, with lower-paid employees continuously moving into higher-paying jobs.”
