Rolls-Royce staff to stage protest over job cuts at Merseyside plant

Workers at luxury car manufacturer Rolls-Royce will stage a protest over plans to close a plant in Bootle, Merseyside.

Up to 212 jobs will be lost at the site, which manufactures turbines for the oil and gas industries, as Rolls-Royce aims to transfer production to the US.

Unite union members at Rolls-Royce will protest on 3 December following a meeting in Liverpool of union officials from a number of plants.

Debbie Brannan, Unite regional officer, said: “Too many highly skilled jobs have already been lost on Merseyside, and we will not stand by and let Rolls-Royce jobs be driven out of this city without a fight. We are asking the local people to support the workers at the threatened site in Bootle and the campaign to oppose the closure.

“These job losses have a devastating effect on families and the communities. We have already gained huge support across Merseyside, but its time the company and government listen to our concerns to protect the future of the workforce,” Brannan added.

A final decision to close the plant will be made following a consultation process, which is expected in the New Year.
