Microsoft’s UK HR chief heads back to the US

Microsoft’s UK HR chief Dave Gartenberg is set to leave the role, Personnel Today can reveal.

Gartenberg, named as ‘one to watch’ in Personnel Today’s Top 40 Power Players in HR last year, is heading back to his native US at the end of his secondment.

He hit the headlines last March when he told Personnel Today that the global IT firm had ditched a supplier simply because of their poor workplace diversity practices.

A Microsoft spokeswoman said this week: “At the end of his secondment to the UK, Dave Gartenberg is returning to Microsoft in the US to take up a role as senior HR director in the online services business. His replacement will be announced in due course.”

Meanwhile, Microsoft’s US arm announced its own supplier diversity scheme last week.

The firm’s US-based law suppliers are now reportedly eligible for a 2% bonus on top of their fees if they achieve certain workforce diversity targets.

Sue Ashtiany, employment partner at UK law firm Nabarro, said: “The fact that major global corporates such as Microsoft are pushing for measurable change and prepared to pay for it is an intriguing development and indicative of the commercial strength of the equality message.”
