The former vice-president of talent at oil giant BP will begin a new post at the CIPD today, overseeing the future of the HR profession.
Stephanie Bird has replaced Mike Watts, former professional development director, in the new role of director of HR capability. She will be responsible for driving through changes to the body’s professional standards, qualifications and routes to membership.
Jackie Orme, CIPD chief executive, has previously said the institute will evolve its qualifcations to become more business-relevant.
Orme said: “[Bird] joins the CIPD at an exciting time as we implement ambitious plans to develop our professional standards, qualifications and routes to membership.
“Stephanie will be responsible for implementing the changes we have planned, and ensuring we maximise their potential to build the capabilities the profession needs for the future.”

Bird was at BP for three years and has held senior HR roles at companies in a variety of different sectors, including Dell Corporation, KPMG and ICI.
Bird said: “It is a privilege to join [the CIPD] at this pivotal time and have the opportunity to build the capability and shape the future of the profession.”
