GM cuts over 300 jobs at Vauxhall’s Luton plant

General Motors, Vauxhall’s American owner, has announced that more than 300 jobs are to go at the company’s Luton car plant.

A General Motors spokesman said that the company was hoping to secure 354 voluntary redundancies from 1,500 Luton staff in order to “right-size the business in line with the 2010 forecast production volume”.

Luton workers, who produce the Vivaro van in a joint venture with Renault, were informed yesterday.

The cuts are the equivalent of cancelling one shift, and had been expected for some time. Negotiations will take place about which jobs to cut, according to the Times.

The redundancies are part of a General Motors programme to cut 9,000 jobs across its Opel and Vauxhall plants in Europe.
