The media industry is as big as the water, gas and electricity industries combined according to a new survey by Skillset. A total of 116,000 people were working in the sector in May 2000.
Previous estimates of the size of the industry have ranged from 40,000 to 80,000 people.
Janet Anderson, Minister for Tourism, Film and Broadcast, said, “This reiterates the growing importance of the creative industries to the UK’s economy. In future, the census will be an important tool in helping the creative sector to identify its skills shortages so that they can be addressed.”
The census covered those people working in broadcast, film, business-to-business and new media.
