Trade
union officials from Eastern Europe are to help UK unions recruit migrant
workers.
Officials
from Estonia, Poland, Georgia and Croatia are to attend the TUC’s annual
organising event – Organise 2002 – and one of the guests, Hannes Roosaar from
Estonia, will stay on after the conference to help construction union UCATT
recruit members from the migrant staff currently working on building sites
around London.
TUC
general secretary John Monks said the initiative would help ensure that workers
are protected regardless of their nationality.
"As
we enter into the age of the global economy, it’s crucial that unions learn to
operate with a worldwide perspective too. The TUC is also keen to ensure any
worker in the UK has the best possible protection from employer abuses,"
he added.
