US downturn leads to job cuts in Devon

An
estimated 700 jobs are to be lost at Nortel Network’s optical components plant
in Paignton, Devon.

A
spokesman for the company said the precise number of jobs to be cut would be
decided during the 90-day consultation period that has just started.

The
networking equipment manufacturer announced it was cutting 10,000 jobs
worldwide because of the economic downturn in the US.
