Retail
union Usdaw has produced a guide to improve the safety of store workers.
The
booklet, part of the union’s Freedom from Fear campaign, aims to reduce retail
violence and restore respect for shopworkers.
Union
deputy general secretary, John Hannett, said: "This guide is a vital part
of our campaign to make shops safer.
"The
support for the Freedom From Fear campaign from retail employers has been very
encouraging. We now need to make sure their commitment and policies are working
effectively at store level.
"The
guide provides a tool-kit for safety reps to use in their workplaces, and to
work with their managers and other local stakeholders to make sure members are
protected.
"Our
research shows us that managers are often reluctant to deal with offenders
because they are unsure of what they can do. One section of the guide explains
in plain English the legal options for employers when there is a case of
serious or persistent violence or abuse.
"Other
sections provide information and advice on legal responsibilities, risk
assessment, preventive measures and training. The guide also gives advice on
the action to take after an incident, and on networking with other retailers,
the police and the local authority."
