Allied Carpets axes 850 jobs as 142 stores close

More than 850 people have lost their jobs at Allied Carpets after administrators confirmed they were closing 142 stores, the Guardian has reported.

BDO Stoy Hayward, the administrator, failed to find a buyer for the bulk of Allied stores. Another 120 jobs are under threat at the 20 outlets remaining in administration and still trading.

The flooring chain collapsed last month, with 21,000 orders still outstanding.

However, BDO said it was hopeful of selling on the 20 remaining outlets and was in negotiations over deals for the premises of the stores that had closed.

“In addition, many of those who operate in the same industry haven’t been comfortable taking the step to extend their current portfolio in such a tough trading climate.”
