Health and wellbeing award winners named

Scarborough’s Crown Spa Hotel and food and Berkshire-based catering company Artizian won the Health, Work and Wellbeing Awards at the National Business Awards in November. The Crown Spa Hotel won the small business award, while Artizian won the award for businesses with more than 250 employees.

OH professor invited to University of California

Dr Stuart Whitaker, senior lecturer in occupational health at the University of Cumbria, has been invited to become a visiting professor in occupational and environmental health nursing at the University of California in San Francisco.

FirstCare buys rival firm

Absence management firm FirstCare has bought its rival, Active Health Partners. The company has said this will lead to an increased volume of real-time absence management to draw on from more than 100,000 staff, as well increasing the number of staff it services by 80%. AHP has also recently launched a new Absence Risk Barometer to help firms quantify the risk of absence and create a profile of reasons for absence.

Pandemic insurance

Health insurer and provider Aon has launched a policy that allows firms to insure against the costs incurred if their building or surrounding vicinity is officially closed because of a pandemic. Cover is being offered on a global, regional or single territory basis, with firms also receiving a free business continuity management guide.

Article correction

The introduction to the article ‘Epilepsy at Work’ by Mel Wyatt in the November 2009 issue of Occupational Health stated that epilepsy is a stress-induced condition. The article itself makes it clear that this is incorrect.
