NHS payroll landmark

The 500,000th NHS employee has been added to the UK’s largest integrated HR and payroll system – the NHS Electronic Staff Record (ESR). When complete, about 1.2 million NHS employees – representing 7% of the UK workforce – will be paid by ESR, which is being delivered by healthcare IT systems company McKesson.

Wage complaints rise

Complaints of non-compliance with the national minimum wage (NMW) rose by 10% this year, an official report found. A report from HM Revenue & Customs showed there were 2,100 calls of complaint to the NMW hotline in 2005-06. There were a larger number of claims from women than men, and notable increases in complaints in the hospitality and hairdressing sectors.

CRE appoints new chair

The Commission for Racial Equality (CRE) has appointed a new chair. Kay Hampton replaces Trevor Phillips on 1 December to allow Phillips to concentrate on his role as head of the Commission for Equality and Human Rights, which will take over from the CRE on 31 October 2007.
