Staff at Welsh car part manufacturer strike over redundancy terms

About 270 car workers at Dura Automotive Systems in Llanelli, Wales, have begun indefinite strike action after failing to reach an agreement over redundancy terms.

The manufacturer, which produces car cable control systems, is due to close at the end of the year.

But Amicus regional officer Carl Lucas said no adequate compensation has been offered to the workers.

“They have not been offered anything apart from the minimum statutory payments which they have to make by law,” he said.

“We need workers to be compensated for giving the company a smooth rundown. We are also looking for enhanced redundancy packages for workers who have given years of loyal service.”

Staff were told in June that the site would be closing.

A statement from Dura said: “Site closures are never easy as we value the contributions of all of our dedicated colleagues.

“Today’s car manufacturing environment is extremely difficult with excess supply over demand, global competition and hyper-inflationary costs. We have been in discussions with Amicus representatives regarding all aspects of the proposed closing of the Llanelli site,” the statement said.
