Number of City jobs rises by a fifth

The number of City jobs created in July was almost 20% higher than the previous month, according to recruitment consultancy Morgan McKinley.

London’s financial district also saw a boost in the number of candidates registering for jobs, up 22% in July from June.

Average City salaries remained above £50,000 for the fifth consecutive month, the Morgan McKinley index showed, but senior-level professional salaries were 7% higher than six months ago.

Robert Thesiger, chief executive of Morgan McKinley, said: “The impact of the increase in foreign workers highlighted in the latest UK unemployment figures has not impacted the City as the skills that are required to work in the financial district are not being mirrored by those choosing to come to Britain.

“From an employer’s perspective the rise in candidate numbers is good news. However, the number of people looking to change roles is still lower than the number of new roles being generated Further highlighting the war for talent.”
