Prime minister Tony Blair outlines ‘full and important’ work programme for Alistair Darling and the DTI

Tony Blair has outlined a “full and important programme of work” for Alistair Darling in his new post as trade secretary.

The prime minister stressed the need for the UK to move towards being an open, globally-integrated “knowledge economy” in manufacturing and services.

In the latest in a series of letters to cabinet ministers, Blair outlined three key public policy priorities for the DTI:

taking the next steps in the strategy for creating wealth through knowledge

successful completion of the energy review and the implementation of its recommendations
