Weapons firm joins construction occupational health scheme

The Atomic Weapons Establishment has become the latest big employer to join the Constructing Better Health occupational health scheme for workers in the construction industry.

The company, which builds and maintains warheads for the UK’s nuclear deterrent Trident, said it was joining the scheme in order to improve occupational health provision within its organisation.

There is a substantial construction element within its work, and the health of construction staff needed to be a high priority, said Sean Ryan, AWE head of construction environment, safety and health.

“In general terms, health management in construction has lagged behind the management of safety and the environment,” he added.

“Often misunderstood, health is a difficult and complex subject to tackle. As environment, safety and health professionals and managers, we must assign a greater amount of effort and time to the proactive health management of our workforce.”
