Unions have warned Coventry City Council that they will pursue their fight for a fair grading system for staff under a controversial new pay deal. Members from Unison and the GMB unions are angry that workers, including cleaners, binmen and nursery nurses, failed to win higher levels of pay after appealing against a single status grading system that was imposed in June affecting up to 10,000 staff. Unison has told members to boycott the appeals procedure, according to the Coventry Evening Telegraph. Under the new pay scheme, more than 1,500 workers lost up to £9,000 a year, more than 3,000 gained and the rest remained the same. More than 800 appeals were registered but less than half were successful. They are now pressing the council to revamp the appeals procedure. Council chief executive Stella Manzie said the question of late appeals would be dealt with as part of on-going discussions with unions through the conciliation service Acas.
