Union condemns Hatfield trial outcome

The RMT union has demanded an update to corporate manslaughter legislation after Network Rail and Balfour Beatty were fined a total of £13.5m for their involvement in the Hatfield disaster in 2000.

Five executives from the companies were cleared of corporate manslaughter, prompting fresh calls for new laws to hold executives personally liable for the deaths of staff members.

“Justice has simply not been done by the debacle of the Hatfield trial,” RMT general secretary, Bob Crow, said today. “Justice will not be done until Britain has a corporate manslaughter law that holds individual executives to account for negligence that kills innocent people.”
