FT identifies ESMT in Berlin as upcoming challenger to LBS and Insead

The Financial Times has identified ESMT European School of Management and Technology in Berlin as a business school challenger “with a reputation in the making”. In the article of the same name, FT journalist Gerrit Wiesmann writes that ESMT is “preparing to take on London Business School and Insead”, two of the consistently top-ranked institutions in the world of business education.

In the half-page feature published on Monday 29th November, the Financial Times states that ESMT, founded in 2002 by 25 of Germany’s best companies with a healthy endowment (€93.16m at the end of 2009), has invested in “stunning” facilities and a top-class, diverse faculty. The goal of these investments is to establish a top international business school in Germany, something that has been historically missing from the country despite its status as Europe’s leading economy. ESMT focuses on responsible leadership and sustainability, European competitiveness, and the management of technology and benefits from close cooperation with its 25 founders, including leading global players such as Allianz, Daimler, Deutsche Bank, Lufthansa, and Siemens.

The article also states that 91 per cent of ESMT graduates get a job within three months of graduating, that there are four applications for every place on the full time MBA course and that the founding companies have recently pledged another €50m to fund further expansion.

Michael Diekmann, CEO of Allianz and Chairman of the ESMT Foundation Board of Trustees, says that “ESMT has been on a path of successful expansion for some years”.

However, the school’s Director of MBA programmes, Nick Barniville, says, ESMT “wants to stay a small school that’s breaking into an elite level – and grow in quality by raising selectivity”.
