Thousands of BBC staff are expected to join mass protests today over planned job cuts, according to union leaders.
Members of broadcast union Bectu, the National Union of Journalists and Amicus have organised a joint day of action against £320m budget savings proposed by director-general Mark Thompson.
The cost-cutting measures could lead to the loss of up to 6,000 jobs and the relocation of entire departments from London.
Demonstrations and meetings will take place at the corporation’s buildings – including White City and Broadcasting House in London.
The BBC unions are warning of industrial action if compulsory redundancies occur.
Details of the cuts are expected to be unveiled later this month.
Unions have pledged to fight against compulsory job cuts, and to resist the further “privatisation” of the BBC.
Negotiations about the changes have been limited so far, with the management saying that until final plans have been approved, there is little to talk about.

However, union representatives at departmental level within the BBC have reported that plans being drafted by local managers could result in staff cuts of up to 50% in some areas.
