HR has more say as role in business expands

The ‘typical’ HR department has one HR practitioner to every 109 employees, although this varies considerably by organisation size and sector, according to new research.

The third annual HR Benchmarks survey, by Personnel Today’s sister publication IRS Employment Review, also reveals that public sector HR departments are more likely to be organised in terms of a strategic role, including having their own budgets and documented strategies. They also spend more time on administrative activities than HR departments in the private sector.

The survey of 128 organisations shows that all respon-dents said HR has become more influential in recent years. This is often been due to new leadership, which has enabled the function to be taken more seriously, and because the regulatory environment has become increasingly demanding.
