DWP to crack down on benefit fraud with new scheme

The
Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has introduced a new initiative to help
crack down on benefit cheats.

The
scheme will allow the department to compare all benefits records against all
employment records from the Inland Revenue, making it easier to track down
people claiming benefits while working.

Andrew
Smith, secretary of state for work and pensions, said the changes would provide
a powerful tool to support welfare reforms.

"Encouraging
people to claim the money they are entitled to while cracking down on fraud is
a key concern of the department," he said.

It
will also help the DWP measure the progress jobseekers make between
unemployment and work. This will allow officials to assess the effectiveness of
its employment programmes and their impact on the long-term unemployed.
