London’s
emergency services still have much work to do if they are to respond
effectively to a major incident or terrorist attack on the capital.
A
training exercise in September, which simulated a serious emergency at Bank
underground station, highlighted shortcomings in the response of the fire,
police and ambulance services.
A
report on the exercise published by the Government shows that although a lot
more contingency planning and preparation has been completed since the mock
incident there is still some way to go to improve London’s capability.
Transport
minister Alistair Darling said more work needs to be done on alternative
planning for difficult environments such at the underground rail network, while
more funding should be injected into improved equipment.
The
exercise also highlighted the need for earlier assessment and improved
communication between agencies – especially on the frontline when most staff
are wearing protective suits.
