The
workforce that maintains Britain’s railway network is set to double following
the decision to stop using private contractors.
More
than 18,000 workers will be transferred to Network Rail after union and public
criticism of inefficiency and poor safety.
The
firm, set up by the Government to operate in the public interest, currently
uses seven different companies, but is set to bring all maintenance in-house.

Rail also wants to reduce the cost of maintenance from £1.3bn a year, to £1bn.
