A
national report by the Adult Learning Inspectorate (ALI) has found the initial
assessment of workers’ needs are often inadequate.
When
an adult learner starts a course, an initial assessment is supposed to set
specific goals and standards so the level of the course is not overly demanding
or too easy.
However,
it is this crucial process that often determines the success of adult learning
process which has been identified as poor by the ALI report.
The
report shows that initial assessment process is four times more likely to be
identified as a weakness than a strength among learning providers.
The
ALI body inspects all programmes of learning funded by the Learning and Skills
Council (LSC) and the current findings were developed between April 2001 and
December 2002.
