The
Government is to begin a pilot of its new Adult Learning Grant, designed to
help young adults meet the costs of gaining qualifications.
The
weekly grant was announced as part of the Skills Strategy and offers an
allowance of £30 a week for people studying full time for a level 2 or 3
qualification, such as GCSEs or A levels.
Once
the scheme has been evaluated, the Government intents to roll it out to more
than 60,000 adult learners.
This
will link in with the introduction of free learning for any adult that doesn’t
have a good foundation of skills for employment, to help them reach a Level 2
(5 GCSEs or equivalent) qualification.
The
grant system is being piloted across the following 10 areas across England,
starting in September with around 12,000 adult learners:
Bedfordshire
and Luton
The Black Country
County Durham
Devon and Cornwall
Humberside
Lancashire
Leicestershire
London West
Shropshire
South Yorkshire
