Inner
London teachers are to receive a larger pay increase than those outside the
capital.
The
pay proposals raise starting salaries in inner London to £21,522, up from
£20,700, compared to £18,105 outside London.
A
report from the Independent School Teachers’ Review Body (STRB) proposes for
teachers in inner London:
–
new pay scales to merge the basic pay scales and the Inner London Allowance;
–
a 4 per cent overall rise from April for all teachers on the main pay scale,
worth on average £1,000, on top of their 7 to 8 per cent annual rise each
September;
–
the second, performance pay point on the upper pay scale to increase by
two-thirds, from £1,000 to £1,670; and
–
pay for heads, deputies and assistant heads to increase by between 6 and 10 per
cent, worth £4,000 on average.
Welcoming
the report, Education Secretary Charles Clarke said: "We are serious about
raising standards in London schools. This pay award provides significant pay
rises for all London teachers. London’s pupils deserve high standards and our
schools need to attract and retain senior and talented teachers. These measures
will help heads, teachers and pupils."

Teachers
in outer London and ‘fringe’ areas will receive a 2.9 per cent award on their
basic pay scales, with 10 per cent more on their London Allowances.
