TUC top jobs to be filled by women

For the first time in its 135-year
history, two of the top three jobs at the TUC are to be taken up by women.

Frances O’Grady and Kay Carberry
have been appointed as the new deputy general secretary and assistant general
secretary respectively.

The appointments follow Brendan
Barber’s election as general secretary elect in December, although the
assistant general secretary post has been vacant since David Lea’s retirement
in 1999.

Frances O’Grady is the current head
of the TUC’s Organisation and Services Department and Kay Carberry is the
current head of the TUC’s Equal Rights Department.

Both positions have wide
responsibilities, with the deputy general secretary leading on inter-union and
organising issues, while the assistant general secretary is responsible for TUC
administration and democratic structures.
