The
troubled Criminal Records Bureau has been ordered to work around the clock to
clear a backlog of staff waiting for clearance to work in schools.
The
CRB, which runs criminal record checks for staff working with children or
vulnerable adults, has assigned an additional 100 staff to help deal with the
195,000-strong backlog of applications.
The
Education Secretary, Estelle Morris, has also reversed the decision that allows
staff to work temporarily in schools while waiting for a full check following
the events in Soham.
Plans
to launch a disclosure which would allow all employers to run a basic check
have been postponed for five months amid fears that the CRB would be even
further overwhelmed.
