NMC promotional tool aims to help employers
Employers of nurses and midwives are being offered a new tool by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) to explain what it does and how it can help employers to protect the health and wellbeing of the public. The tool outlines the role of the NMC and how to make a referral to it.
Axa launches low-cost medical insurance plan
Health insurer and provider Axa PPP has launched a low-cost medical insurance plan for larger employers (those with 75 staff or more). The Corporate Health Plan Pathways is based on the firm’s existing Corporate Health Plan, with the key difference being its use of a system of “open referral” for specialist investigations, led by Axa PPP, rather than leaving it up to the GP to refer to a named specialist.
Top mental disorders in Armed Forces revealed
The most frequent mental health problems reported by Armed Forces’ personnel are alcohol misuse and common mental health disorders, a study in The Lancet has concluded. Yet overall, the prevalence of mental health disorders remains stable, and post-traumatic stress disorder is not as common as sometimes feared, it added.

Occupational physician Denis D’Auria dies
Denis D’Auria, an editor of the journal Occupational Medicine for 18 years and a distinguished consultant occupational physician at the University Hospital of Wales, has died. As well as the NHS, D’Auria worked in the nuclear and banking sectors and was instrumental in setting up an online MSc programme in occupational health at the trust. His commitment to training was recognised by the Faculty of Occupational Medicine in the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland in 2007, when he was appointed academic registrar.
