Safety awareness drive aims to cut construction deaths

A
campaign to cut the number of construction workers injured and killed on site
was launched today.

The
‘Working Well Together’ campaign is run by the Health and Safety Commission’s
Construction Industry Advisory Committee, with sponsorship from large
construction companies, the Health & Safety Executive and the TUC.

As
part of the initiative a bus will visit construction sites all around the UK
with information packs and advice on how to stay healthy and safe at work.

The
sector only employs around 7 per cent of the UK’s workforce, but accounts for 30
per cent of reported accidents. Between April 2000 and March 2001 more than 100
construction staff were killed and 4,600 injured.

Rosi Edwards, head of the HSE’s construction division for
Wales, the midlands and the south west, said: “It gives the workers the chance
to think about how they can take simple measures to stay safe at work and
introduces some fun into the message."
