Tories claim teacher shortage is “getting worse”

The
shortage of teachers is becoming worse, according to a Conservative Party
survey, which shows a 77 per cent rise in vacancies since last year.

A
survey of 17 local education authorities showed figures much worse than the
Government’s, the report says. In some areas the number of vacant posts had
more than doubled.

London
feared especially badly. In Hackney, 8 per cent of posts were unfilled, while
in Kensington and Chelsea, the figure was 6.6 per cent.

Damian
Green, shadow education secretary, said: "No wonder teachers are fed up
and are leaving the profession in alarming numbers.
