Pay provides carrot as public sector bids to attract talent

Public sector pay is set to outpace wage increases in the private sector
this year, research claims.

A report by Incomes Data Services finds that pay rises to many public
sector workers over the past year have been much higher than agreed headline
settlements as the Government attempts to boost recruitment and retention in
schools and hospitals.

The report predicts that there will be continued strong growth in public
sector pay through the rest of this year.

Figures released last week reveal that public sector annual earnings in
December were 5.1 per cent higher than the previous year compared to a 1.2 per
cent increase for the private sector.

Among the pay increases adding to public sector pay growth are a 3.6 per
cent rise for doctors, dentists, nurses and midwives from April and a 3.5 per
cent increase for teachers in England and Wales.
