Nothing can be more professionally rewarding than being asked to help shape
a business at a higher level. So Bill Dykes is delighted with his promotion to
HR director and is excited about the big step up: "I’m really looking
forward to having a voice in the decision-making at board level and being part
of the bigger business plan," he says.

"I’m still responsible for training; health and safety; and quality –
but now I also oversee the legal implications of all our contracts and help to
align the people strategy with the business plan."

Despite his elevation he still sees the day-to-day functions of HR as
fundamental to the business: "Ultimately, I want to maximise the
contribution our employees make to the business. The people and the business
plan go hand in hand at Select and I want to make sure our staff are getting
the best out of the business so the business gets the best out of our
staff," he says.

Dykes, who enjoys cycling and walking in the country, still gets a kick from
helping staff through the company ranks.

"I really enjoy working in HR as it enables me to influence all levels
of the business, as people are vital to every part of it. It’s great to see the
tangible difference people make to the business. When you recruit staff and
train them, you really see them develop and add to the business and this is
very satisfying."
