The
panel appointed to review London weighting will meet for its first evidentiary
hearing later this month.
As
reported by Personnel Today last October, a six-strong panel will look at the
issues surrounding compensation for the higher cost of living and working in
London.
The
London weighting concept is being re-evaluated for the first time since 1974
and the panel will also examine how pay in the capital contributes to staff
retention and recruitment.
The
panel comprises members of public, private, trade union and academic bodies.
Its representatives are Bill Knight, Francesca Okosi, Denise Milani, John
Chastney, Professor Robert Elliot and Chris Humphreys.
Chairman
of the panel, Bill Knight, said: “Many people say they can no longer afford to
live in the capital and this is a really big problem affecting recruitment and
retention. We want our report, which will be completed next summer, to be
genuinely useful to decision-makers.
“If
we do our job properly, our report should help those who negotiate pay to set a
fair London premium,” he added.
The
team will hear evidence from individuals, departments, employers and experts.
The first hearing is scheduled for 23 January.
