10 per cent work more than 55 hours a week

One in 10 UK workers claim to work more than 55 hours a week
according to a survey conducted by banking software firm Corillian.

The research also finds that people in the north work a
longer week than their Southern counterparts.

According to the research:

Britons work an average of 36 hours per week.

Men work a longer week than women (over 40 hours versus just under 30 hours)

Women are five times more likely to be in part-time employment than men

–
Seven times more men than women work more than 50 hours per week (14 per cent
versus 2 per cent)

People in their thirties work the longest week of all the age groups, putting
in an average 37.5 hours per week

–
11 per cent of thirty-somethings claim to work more than 50 hours

–
The twenties and forties age groups are not too far behind, each working just
one hour less (36.6 hours each per week)

Regional variations

–
People in the north work the longest week (38.9 hours)

–
The shortest working hours are in Scotland (34.1 hours) and London (34.4 hours)

–
People in the north are almost twice as likely to work more than 50 hours a
week than people in the capital (13 per cent versus 6 per cent)

–
The South West has the highest incidence of part time workers – 19 per cent
work less than 20 hours a week
