The
Health and Safety Executive has published new guidance on medical exposure to
radiation covering the legal responsibilities of senior directors.
Chief
executives and senior management within the NHS and private healthcare as well
as other medical staff such as dentists and chiropractors could also benefit
from the guidelines.
They
were written in association with the Department of Health, and provide an
outline of the legal responsibilities as set out in The Ionising Radiations
Regulations (1999) (2000), which state that an employer must manage the
radiation protection of patients, employees and the general public.
The
regulations apply to any employer using ionising radiation for medical purposes
including diagnostic imaging, unsealed radioisotopes, nuclear medicine,
radiotherapy and those providing healthcare to patients prescribed radioactive
medicinal products.
