The minimum wage should be linked to average earnings to
prevent it falling behind the general rise of average earnings.
This is the view of research body Catalyst, which has
published a paper by Kingston University lecturer Sanjiv Sachdev that argues Britain
should adopt a model used by France that ensures the minimum wage does not lose
its value.
Martin McIvor, research officer for Catalyst, said, “The
government has shown a great concern for creating stable policy frameworks
insulated from political interference to allow business to plan for the long-term.

“But when it comes to securing incomes of the low-paid none
of these considerations seem to apply.”
